Instant Messaging, a plea.

I occasionally realize that the people who say they hate IM’s are right. I mean, they are, in a way. IM’s are almost as bad a communication tool as bongo drums in New York. Yeah..

For instance, if you talk to me on IM’s, you bet your cute little ass I’m not just talking to you. 100% of the time (that is, every single time) that I am talking to somebody on IM’s, I won’t bother waiting for them to get back from what they were doing, read my response(s), think out a response or set of responses to my response(s), and then write that out to me on their little keyboards. No. If I sat there waiting for this set of events to take place, I would do

nothing

but

talking

on

IM’s.

Kay?

Thanks.

    *snicker* Bad day?

Multi-tasking (whether it’s other IM partners or other applications on the same desktop) and juggling multiple timezones around… yeah, that can make it quite interesting. *grin*

Yeah, though I get the feeling not everyone shares this view on things. “Hello? Where’d you go?” style comments make me want to just toss Adium out the window and revert to emails only. People at least don’t expect immediate responses to THOSE.

(Imagine that. An email directly followed by another email going “Hello? Where’d you go? Why aren’t you replying?” Heh. Horrible thought.)

I’ve had those too, actually. Since I’m online most of the day during work hours, people do occasionally expect me to see emails instantly. At one point I tried to keep up with them all the time as well but that just drives you crazy after a while. So I try to limit it to a few times per day, now.

  5. Nicole says:

Heh, Yeah I’ve had my share of those. Like emails asking why I’m not responding on messenger. Utterly ridiculous. Sometimes I’m really fast at replying on messenger, sometimes I’m slower than hell. Depends on what I’m doing. A conversation with me could last all day long because there are such long breaks in between. But some people find that annoying. Oh well.

  6. Erwin says:

Yup. The only useful nag of that kind I’ve had is when the connection to ICQ and/or AIM has been screwed up and my client had simply not realized it, hours later. Gotta love software!
