Today I spent 13 hours (15 really, if you count the 2 hour pause in between) writing elisp extensions to Emacs for Skotos interaction. It was wonderful, and I was pleased. And the world smiled upon me…

So I tell Nino, the one person on this planet who actually might be impressed about this. But alas, he’s afk.

So my boss immediately goes into “afk” mode when I IM him the glorious news.

So Sahra starts talking about peacocks in spring when I tell HER the news.

I guess it’s not as big as I think it is. But man, I’ve wanted this for over a year. And now it’s in my grasp. Happiness!

  1. That’s a coding frenzy to say the least. What I don’t get (and yes, this is obviously the sort of statement I’m entirely expecting a nice little condescending pat on the head for) is why? What will it allow you to do? AKA - What is the method to your madness?

From my very limited experience with the evil and complicated thing that is Emacs (yes, I’m sure you consider that sacrilege, but you’ll live), I have only seen it to really be a text editor with lots of quick navigation. Did you … *guesses* somehow manage to have it let you log into the Skotos system to edit remotely using emacs?

I’m utterly befuddled - feel free to educate me. Regardless, I’m glad you managed to do something you have wanted for over a year.

  2. In fact… yes.

I’ve written a set of elisp bindings that I can use to log in, fetch properties from objects and edit those as if they were “virtual files” on my hard disk. When I hit save, a customized key binding sends a HTTP POST to the skotos server, telling it to store the property.

    *grins*

And I hated Emacs too, until I sat down with it together with someone and worked on a project for 10 hours straight. You can’t see the beauty of it that easily unless you have someone with you who is used to using it.

Something to do with it being weekend. ;-) And yes, I am impressed!

    –Nino.
