Evolution got into a funny habit of crashing several times a day. Personally, I think it’s because I have like 500 mbs of email stocked up in there, but whatever the reason, I’ve had enough.
Which is sad, because as I said, I have 500 mbs worth of email in there. I’ve used Evolution for… almost 10 damn years. 10 years on the same app is impressive, to say the least. (I started using Evolution in the end of er.. last millennia, but due to a reinstall/crash I only have emails dating back to 2000 in Evolution).
Bye Evolution, Hi Thunderbird. Gotta love choice.
But this of course makes me curious about the longest time you guys have used the same application, excluding operating systems? (And they say you’re supposed to finish your blog posts with a question to your readers, so I guess I’ll do that.
)
Do ‘screen’, ‘bash’, and ‘ssh’ count, at that? Probably easily a decade for those. Email-wise I evolved from Elm, to Pine, to Mutt, to Thunderbird, with a small stretch of Netscape at one job, Outlook at another (not very long, I assure you) and tkRat(atosk) for a while as well, but I don’t recall when it was, exactly.
To be honest, I still miss features in Thunderbird that I did have in Mutt, which occasionally makes me wonder if the decision to switch was a bad one. Of course the advantage of using IMAP means that changing won’t be so painful next time, but the time it takes to get settled in a new client is annoying.
I know what you mean. I lost some cool things from Evolution in the transition, but I gained some cool features as well. Like Enigmail. *squee*
And no, I don’t think “tools” like ‘screen’ or ‘bash’ count. It has to be some application, otherwise we can just say ‘cd’ all of us, and then count the years we’ve used computers and there you have the answer, pretty much. (Of course, some uninitiated Win-freaks out there might not even know what ‘cd’ is.)
I think ‘screen’ and ‘bash’ are more than just tools, but I’m not sure where to draw the line. As for ‘cd’, that is part of ‘bash’ or whatever shell you use, so it doesn’t count for that particular reason.
Do Apache, MySQL and such count, in your view?
Well.. I guess you’re right about cd being a part of bash, yeah. And Apache, MySQL etc. don’t count. They’re not applications, really, they’re servers. *scrolls up to see what he did say originally* I did say “application”, yeah. By application, I think stuff like email/IM clients and browsers and such.
You draw a subtle line there, pard’ner, but oh well.
Completely back to your original posting: Can’t you export those 500MB (and not 500 millibits, I hope) out of Evolution in some mbox/maildir format that Thunderbird can reuse?
I would love that. I’m gonna do some research. Thanks for nudging me about it. I simply gave up without thinking, so to say.
(And I guess the subtle line part is true… so let’s say “the stuff with alternatives”, which includes email apps but excludes screen and cd and such..)
FYI, I did some digging around. Turns out evolution and thunderbird use the SAME FORMAT so all I had to do was (well.. “all” is not the right word, but comparatively it is) copy the email files from evolution into thunderbird. I am pleased. Yes sir I am. Thanks again for prompting.
Glad I could help
